Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

« Back to Glossary Index

Fossil fuel use is the primary source of CO2, but the gas can also be emitted from direct human-induced impacts on forestry and other land use, such as deforestation, land clearing for agriculture, and degradation of soils. Likewise, land use can also remove CO2 from the atmosphere through reforestation, improvement of soils, and other activities. CO2 makes up the majority of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and is therefore the primary driver of global climate change.
